Eljadida excursion

 

El Jadida (formerly called Mazagan) is a seaside city on the Moroccan Atlantic coast that worth a visit. With a rich historical heritage, it was declared a World Heritage by UNESCO in 2004.

 

El Jadida was built by the Portuguese in the early sixteenth century and was taken up by the Alaouite Sultan Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah in 1979.

 

It is this Portuguese architectural heritage that attracts the attention of visitors to this city including buildings and fortifications demonstrating the Portuguese era.

 

Through this excursion to El Jadida you will see the walls surrounding the Medina and the canons pointing towards the ocean that was used to defend against the conquests. The Medina is characterized by narrow streets and contains homes that represent masterpieces of Portuguese architecture. You will also visit the Portuguese cistern that was rediscovered by chance in 1916. It consists of a large subterranean room with a surface of ​​1100 m2 supported by 25 columns and pillars with a hole in the middle of the roof allowing lights to penetrate inside. Orson Welles filmed scenes of his famous film Othello and other Films in this room.

 

The Church of assemption is another monument which requires a stop to admire its impressive architecture.

 

You will then head to the port and to the city of Azemmour and the resort of Sidi Bouzid and Oualidia situated a few kilometers in the south of El jadida before to go back to Marrakech at the end of the day.
